Cancun weather FAQ
When is the best time to visit Cancun?
December through April — Cancun's dry season. You get warm days in the 80s°F, low humidity, minimal rain, calm turquoise water, and no hurricane threat. The trade-off is peak tourist season with the highest prices and busiest resorts of the year.
Should I visit Cancun during hurricane season?
It's a real risk-reward calculation. Peak Atlantic hurricane season runs August through October, and Cancun sits in an active track zone. Direct hits are statistically uncommon in any specific week, but disruption is possible — flight delays, resort closures, evacuation orders on rare occasions. Prices are lower, crowds thinner. Buy travel insurance and be flexible.
How hot does Cancun get?
Hot year-round, but not extreme. Highs sit in the low-to-mid 80s°F in the dry season, upper 80s to low 90s in the wet season, with high humidity making it feel hotter. Ocean water stays 78–85°F year-round. Sun exposure is intense — high UV even on cloudy days.
What is the sargassum issue?
Sargassum is a brown seaweed that occasionally washes up on Cancun and Riviera Maya beaches in large amounts, worst typically May through August. When it hits heavily, it affects both beach aesthetics and the smell. It's variable year to year and beach to beach — resorts have improved at daily cleanup. Worth checking recent reports if beach conditions are essential to your trip.
