Hong Kong weather FAQ
When is the best time to visit Hong Kong?
October and November — warm days, low humidity, minimal typhoon risk, and the city's clearest skies of the year. December through February is also excellent if you don't mind cooler temperatures. Avoid July through September if possible — that's peak typhoon season.
How bad is typhoon season in Hong Kong?
Manageable, with real disruption risk. Hong Kong has a well-organized typhoon warning system (signals T1 through T10) that closes schools, halts public transit, and grounds flights when a strong storm approaches. Direct hits happen every few years but rarely cause major infrastructure damage — the city is built for it. If you're traveling August–September, monitor the Hong Kong Observatory forecasts closely.
Is Hong Kong humid year-round?
Very humid from March through September. Winter months (December through February) are dramatically drier and more comfortable. If humidity affects your comfort, the cool-dry season is worth prioritizing.
Does Hong Kong ever get cold?
Chilly, not cold. Winter highs average in the mid-60s°F with lows in the mid-50s. Occasional cold snaps push into the 40s. Snow is essentially unheard of in the urban area. Locals bundle up more than the temperatures require — bring a light jacket for December through February.
