Paris Weather in January

🌧 Wet☁ Gray Skies🥶 Cold + Damp🏛 Museum Weather

Planning a trip to Paris in January? Here's what the weather is really like — and how to plan around the cold, gray days that define the month.

January is one of the chillier and wetter months in Paris. Highs sit in the low to upper 40s°F, nights drop into the 30s (occasionally with frost), and the city sees 8–10 days of rain — making it one of the wetter months of the year. Skies stay gray, the dampness is real, and snow is possible when cold Siberian air pushes in from the east and meets moisture coming off the Gulf Stream.

The upside: fewer crowds, lower prices, and a city full of world-class museums made for damp afternoons. Meteorologist Ian Schwartz breaks down what to expect.

Paris in January FAQ

What is the weather like in Paris in January?

Cold, gray, and damp — one of the wetter months in Paris, but a great time for fewer crowds and museum days.

  • Highs: 42–48°F (low to upper 40s)
  • Lows: 32–38°F (30s, occasional frost)
  • Rain: 8–10 days — one of the wetter months
  • Snow possible when Siberian cold meets Gulf Stream moisture

Does it snow in Paris in January?

Occasionally. Most of the time Paris stays milder than its latitude suggests thanks to the Gulf Stream. But when a high pressure system locks Arctic continental air over Europe — sometimes called the Siberian High — cold air pushes west, meets Atlantic moisture, and Paris can get a brief dusting of snow. It usually doesn't stick for long in the city.

Is January a good time to visit Paris?

It's a trade-off. You'll deal with cold, damp, and short daylight, but in return you get noticeably thinner crowds, lower hotel rates, and one of the best stretches of the year for museum days and lingering in cafés. If gray weather doesn't bother you, January is genuinely underrated.
