Sydney weather FAQ
When is the best time to visit Sydney?
October, November, March, and April — Sydney's shoulder seasons. You get warm days, mild nights, ocean warm enough for swimming, lower crowds than peak summer, and lower prices. Australian school holidays (mid-December through late January) drive peak crowds and prices.
Is Sydney warm in winter?
Mild, not warm. June through August highs sit in the low-to-mid 60s°F with sunny days and cool nights — think San Francisco winter, not Boston. Rain picks up compared to summer. It's a very reasonable winter as winters go, but you're not swimming in the ocean without a wetsuit.
What about bushfire smoke in Sydney?
A real consideration during severe fire seasons. When conditions align — heat wave, wind, dry landscape — smoke from inland fires can drift into the city and drop air quality significantly. It's most likely December through February. Check AQI forecasts closer to your trip if you're traveling during peak fire season.
Does it get humid in Sydney?
Yes, in summer. January and February humidity combined with heat makes it feel considerably hotter than the temperature alone suggests. Coastal breezes help; if you can, prioritize accommodations closer to the harbor or ocean. Autumn and spring humidity is very manageable.
