Tokyo Weather in February

❄ Cold☀ Crystal Clear🌸 Plum Blossoms🗻 Mt. Fuji Views

Planning a trip to Japan in February? Here's what Tokyo's weather is really like — and why it's one of the best months of the year for photography.

February is still winter in Tokyo, but it's a quieter, drier, sharper winter than most travelers expect. Highs sit in the upper 40s to low 50s°F, nights drop into the 30s (occasionally below freezing), and rain stays minimal at 5–7 days for the month.

The payoff: crystal clear skies. Mount Fuji is exceptionally visible this time of year, nighttime city shots come out beautifully, and plum blossoms (ume) — the lesser-known prelude to cherry blossom season — start appearing later in the month. Meteorologist Ian Schwartz breaks down what to expect.

Late February to early March is when ume (plum blossoms) typically peak in Tokyo — several weeks before cherry blossoms. Fuji is at peak visibility, plum blossoms begin late month, and crowds are noticeably thinner than during peak fall or cherry blossom season.
